August 21, 2006 by Debra Russell

Dear Subscriber,

Is it possible we’ve been doing this newsletter for over 2 years, and have not yet covered the single biggest issue our clients and members struggle with?!

Clearly it is time to talk about the vital area of Time Management.

Plus, stay tuned for an upcoming announcement of how we are spending our time this season.
Joy and Success,

Challenge of the Month
Time Management 101

A major factor in your success at anything hinges on how effectively you use your time.

Nearly everyone we work with – nearly everyone we know – wishes they had more time, or could get more out of the time they have.

Imagine the difference it would make if you could put even just a few extra hours a week into building the things you care about most, and take time out for fun every day. We offer a few basic tips to get you started.

Debra’s Solutions
Breaking Through Inertia

Procrastination: To put off doing something, especially out of habitual carelessness or laziness.

Not very helpful is it? We all experience it. But what is it really? And more importantly, how do you get moving? Procrastination isn’t actually the problem, but a symptom of things occurring at a deeper level.

In my experience, it’s rarely laziness, but it may be habitual. Define what is causing the procrastination and you can begin to get past it. Don’t assume you know. Genuinely ask yourself, “What is really going on?”

Some possibilities could be:

  • Uncertainty – I don’t have any idea what to do in the face of these circumstances
  • Indecision – I don’t know which action to take, so I won’t take any
  • Overwhelm – There’s so much to do, I don’t know where to start
  • Unconscious processing – I’m working something through and when I’m ready, I’ll be able to take action with ease
  • Resistance and resentment – I’m not getting my needs met and so like a little child, I stomp my feet and refuse to budge
  • And the elephant in the room – FEAR! But define what the fear is and you can access your courage to move forward

Once you define what the problem actually is, you can begin to see possible solutions. I’ll be talking more on these specific issues in the Artist’s EDGE blog – stay tuned!

Quit Trying to Get it All Done!

One of the most freeing things you can do to maximize the value of your time is to view it in an entirely new way.

We’ve been trained to focus on all the many things there are for us to do, and then try to figure out how we’re going to fit it all in. Here’s the answer: You Can’t!

The truth is, You will NEVER get it ALL done. Every one of us has far more to do than time to do it in. It’s as if you have one small suitcase to take on vacation, and you’re trying to pack in everything you own. You can’t possibly squeeze it all in. So quit trying to!

It’s far more effective to focus on the time you have (the “suitcase”, i.e., your calendar), and then choose what you’ll fill it with. Which of the many things you could do will bring you the most value – earn you money quickest, be most fun for you, get you closer to your goals?

Choose the highest-value activities (you get to decide which those are) … and let the rest go!

Chances are, a whole lot of important things aren’t getting done now! That’s reality. Stop feeling guilty about it, and consciously choose what to accomplish and what to release. Fly and be free!
