This is a pretty cool concept (although I have yet to use it personally).
Basically, if you need a design (logo, book cover, myspace page, twitter page, whatever), you create a contest, receive submissions for that design and choose and pay only for the design you like (the winner of the contest). While you pay to run the contest and you pay the winner – you know what you’re getting and you ONLY pay for the finished design. You are not paying by the hour for work that isn’t what you want!
As a graphic designer, while you are not being paid for your submissions – you are not paying to submit either. It only costs your time. And you are not judged on experience (or lack), or job history. You are only judged on the quality of the design you submit to the contest. And there’s nothing to stop you from selling those designs that don’t win to someone else.
